2022.01.28 14:14 pedalsfordays Restaurants in Bellingham Using Public Pool Consulting
I recently found out that Aslan Brewery, Bellingham Cider Co. , Storia Cucina, and the new Time and Materials Taphouse have implemented a "Public Pool" program for tipping. The program was created by some business savvy entrepreneur who is a former employee of Aslan. Here is a link to their website: publicpoolconsulting.com.
The claim is that this program is meant to increase equity among staff by giving restaurant workers a greater percentage of tips, in turn, incentivizing them to bring in more business to up their wages.
It works like this:
All tips are pooled for a pay period, and then divided out among the staff to get them to their "target wages".
Target wages are set differently depending upon position (e.g. $27 for server, and $18 for line cook).
The base wage (min. wage) is paid to all employees, and then the pooled tips for the entire pay period are paid to everyone in different percentages to make up for the rest of the wages needed to meet the target.
Here is a quick calculation to show how this program works, or doesn't work, depending on how you look at it.
Scenario 1 (Public Tip Pooling/Tips Make Up Part of "Living Wage"):
A back of house (BOH) employee and a front of house (FOH) employee both get paid $14.5/h by the employer. They both work a 5-hour shift together. In that shift there are $1,000 in sales. Of those sales, an average of 18% is tips.
Total tips = $180
Employer wage cost = ($14.5*5)+($14.5*5) = $145
Total wages to be paid = ($18*5)+($27*5) = $225
Tips needed to make target wages = $80
Excess tips = $100
BOH employee wage with 50% of tips = ($90 wages + $50 tips) / 5 = $28/h
FOH employee wage with 50% of tips = ($135 wages + $90 tips) / 5 = $37/h
Average wage per staff = ($140 BOH wages + $185 FOH wages) / 2 people / 5 hours = $32.5 US dollars
Scenario 2 (No Public Tip Pooling/Employer Pays "Living Wage"/Tips Split Equally):
Total tips = $180
Employer wage cost = ($18*5)+($18*5) = $180
BOH employee wage with 50% of tips = ($90 wages + $90 tips) / 5 = $36/h
FOH employee wage with 50% of tips = ($90 wages + $90 tips) / 5 = $36/h
Average wage per staff = $36/h
Why not just pay all staff members a living wage to begin with, then let staff members split tips equally? Why pay a consulting company to create a program that makes it so your employees will likely take home less money on average? What Public Pool Consulting's program appears to be doing is simply saving money for the employer at the expense of staff members' wages. The FOH tips subsidize BOH wages for the employer. This is not the kind of "progressive" work reform we need. Employers are not doing their staff members any favors by limiting their wages and then guaranteeing them that they will make enough because of tips. Tipping is part of the wage problem, not the solution.

2022.01.28 14:14 Throwaway_4748 53F Persistent cough and feeling like something is "stuck" in throat - possible thyroid/other tumor?
For the past 4 months, my mother (53F) has had frequent coughing and a feeling that there is something "stuck" in her throat. On one occasion, she also choked on her food and it was difficult to get the food out, it took about 5 minutes. My mother has an enlarged thyroid since several years (8-10 years), although at the time the enlargement was found to be benign. However I am worried that the enlargement may have grown, or her thyroid may now be malignant, which is causing her current symptoms. I am also worried that her current symptoms may be due to some other growth in the neck, as sometimes she said she was occasionally coughing out a bit of yellowish sputum, usually after waking up (around 4-5AM), so I don't see how a thyroid tumor could increase sputum production. Although most of the time she said she only coughs out saliva
My dad thinks that she is coughing because of seasonal allergies. Even though my mom doesn't have seasonal allergies at this time of year, my dad thinks that it is because of her staying in the home for the majority of the last 2 years (cuz of COVID), which is causing allergies
She asked a doctor but didn't tell the doctor about her thyroid at all. The doctor just prescribed her some antihistamines (desloratadine) and inhalational beclomethasone for 10 days
My mom had investigated her thyroid issue in 2015. At the time, while taking the sample, the person taking the sample advised my mom to repeat the test every once in a while, but my mother never repeated it.
AFAIK some of my mom's sisters also had "thyroid enlargement" at some point in their lives, but I don't know if they still have an enlargement or not, and I don't know any cases of thyroid cancer in our family
So, what is the possibility/likelihood that her symptoms are due to a tumor?
Her ultrasound/FNAC/lab reports which were done in june 2015 are below:
The ultrasound of thyroid done with 7-12MHz probe.
No previous films are available for comparison
Thyroid is enlarged with a large nodule measuring 5.5cm x 3.4cm in the left lobe along with smaller nodules - left lobe nodule measures 1.2cm x 1.6cm and in right lobe measures 1cm x 0.6cm.
No abnormal vascularity seen
Few insignificant regional lymph nodes are noted largest measuring 0.4cm
Impression: Multinodular goiter, advised FNAC
(I can provide the picture of the ultrasound if it would help)
FNAC Thyroid non-guided
Fine needle aspiration attempted from the palpable nodular swelling (about 5 x 3 cm) in the left lobe of thyroid.
Cellular smears show clusters and some fragments of benign follicular cells, many of which are arranged in variable sized follicles. A few clusters show Hurthle cell change and anisonucleosis. Some hemosiderin laden cyst macrophages are seen in the background containing thin and thick inpissated colloid mixed with blood.
Diagnosis: Thyroid nodular swelling (left lobe) : TBSRTC (The Bethesda System of reporting thyroid cytopathology): benign nodular colloid goitre with cystic change
Free T4: 8.1pmol/L
Thyroperoxidase antibody: 840.60IU/mL
25 OH Vitamin D: 47nmol/L
Normal joint spaces
Normal bony alignment
Linear calcification is noted in the greater tubercle(supraspinatus tendon), suggestive of chronic tendonitis
The visualized part of lung is unremarkable
If any other information is needed please let me know

2022.01.28 14:14 Whosebert Take Summer Vacation in the Wintertime when snow impacts school attendance anyways.
My soup at work was lamenting about how her kids have attended so few school days this month due to snow and the idea popped into my head. Instead of having 2 weeks off winter break for Christmas, take 1 or 2 weeks off for the 4th of July. Snow storms will still happen in March but at least you skip the January and February storms.
Before you comment that kids never have iff because you live on the frozen tundra where you're better than everyone else, consider just reading this comic from The Oatmeal instead

2022.01.28 14:14 kwsparks Market jump today and my post last night...
Last night, I made a post about how I thought that many stocks were getting a nice bump bc of short-covering and how this has influenced the SPY and QQQ lately (hence the mid-day runs and AH spikes). Today is no exception. I am still inclined to believe that this is what is happening right now. Take a look at Robinhood (labeled as HTB), Knights ope (not labeled, but the runup is parabolic suggesting the same thing), Provention, and multiple others. I believe the market is targeting retail to convince us that these runs are bc of faith in the market and Apple's earnings, but this (I believe) is a distraction to make retail bag-holders on the broader market.
Tldr; more is coming. Remain vigilant and be cautious. Good luck everyone!!!

2022.01.28 14:14 Freecandyvanj1 What salary increase would be enough to make you consider changing jobs.
Let’s say you have a good stable position that pays well but you are not utilizing your skill set and you are bored with the day to day but it’s secure and little chance of being let go.
Enter new opportunity that sounds like it would be a fun new challenge with a potential for advancement but also a potential of failure because of the unknown. This only pays very slightly better. Do you consider the leap or stay put.
To put it into context I am at a mid career point with a family to support. I am also in a career that I should have no issue finding another job but probably not with the same benefits I have currently?
